A message from Lacie’s furmum
I just wanted to thank you so very much from the bottom of my heart for our beautiful gifts. Lacie is absolutely in love with her heat pack, the support lead is amazing for adding that extra support for her and she seemed to really enjoy her dinner in her new LikiMat!  Can’t wait to be able to put some frozen treats in it for summer for her.
The support magnet, brochures and beautiful handwritten note with the extra wipe cloth were all beautifully received and I was really touched.
I can’t wait until this nightmare is over and hoping she makes a full recovery, which seems to be so much more achievable with you guys by our side, so thank you!
❤️🥰

Leroy IVDD Assist

Leroy IVDD Assist

Leroy standing up for the first time

DISA understands how difficult it is for owners when confronted with this disease and we are committed to helping owners who are committed to their hounds, who never give up and like all Dachshunds, never say never.

Meet Leroy, a handsome black and tan short-haired boy who lives with his pawrents Jack & Jessica and his fur brother Patrick in Rockhampton QLD.

Like with many IVDD episodes, Leroy had been acting a little strange, not running about and appeared reluctant to move so he was taken to his local Vet on a Wednesday and then again on Thursday.  Then on Friday, he woke up fine, but by the end of the day he couldn’t stand up and one leg was dragging.  His pawrents returned to the vet who suggested seeking a specialist assessment while he was prescribed anti-inflammatories and pain medication.  Saturday, his condition deteriorated further, and a call was made to a DISA Support volunteer who during the conversation covered available options and outcomes which assisted Leroy’s pawrents in making an informed decision.  For Leroy to have the best chance of recovery, it was decided to drive 7hrs to Brisbane for a Specialist assessment.   The Specialist confirmed that Leroy had a slipped disc that was pressing on vital spinal nerve endings, and sadly was not responsive to deep pain.  Emergency surgery was performed that evening and the long healing process began, with his pawrents remaining in Brisbane to be with their special boy, ever confident that he would rebound and recover.

It took a few days for Leroy to start displaying positive signs as his ordeal had been a long process of vet consults and then a long road trip.  He settled in well with the amazing nursing staff at VSS Underwood, and he remained there for six days until he was well enough to return on the long journey home.

DISA followed his journey with interest, and it was a no-brainer when his pawrents reached out to us for a little leg up!  The heart-warming part of this story is that two of our volunteers met up with Jack, Jessica & Leroy at a stop on the Bruce Highway on their journey homeward to deliver a booty of gifts to help them with their IVDD journey.

After cuddles and hugs, Leroy was popped safely back into the car along with a La Luna Stroller, stroller badge, belly band and a pack of pee pads.  And understanding that Rockhampton is limited in allied resources, there was also a package of useful IVDD rehab aids popped in the boot!  These aids had recently been donated to DISA by a caring owner who has been through the journey numerous times.  (Thanks Anne & Audrey Rose xx).

It’s now been nearly two weeks since Leroy came home, he has been settling into his new routine, challenging his pawrents with the restricted rest (like all Dachshunds do) and loving his new wheels!  He has even been sleeping beside the human bed at night in his stroller, but the best part is, he can now pee on his own, his deep pain has returned, and he is standing up on his own, particularly when food is involved.

Like with most high-grade recoveries, it takes time and patience and the signs at this early stage are extremely encouraging.  We wish Leroy a safe, gentle healing journey.  You have got this in spades!

Frankie IVDD Assist

Frankie is a 5-year-old boy from SA who started displaying vague symptoms one evening and it was assumed he had overextended himself playing with his fur sister.  Sadly, the following morning he woke, unable to move.  A trip to the emergency vet ensued and following a neurological assessment, IVDD was confirmed.  The consulting vet recommended that if surgery was not an option, the humane thing to do was give Frankie his angel wings.

This was not a decision his family could make so soon, so Frankie was medically managed while the family considered all options.  Knowing only too well that he had been his fur-mums best friend and companion during the tough times and so loved by his family it was a no-brainer; it was time to repay Frankie for his love and devotion.

Two days later Frankie underwent surgery at the Austin Vet Specialist Centre in South Australia and two days later Frankie decided it was time to once again more those little legs!  He was discharged and has been back home in the loving care of his family, resting and healing for the last eight weeks.

IVDD Assist has gifted Frankie hydrotherapy sessions to help him with his recovery and rehabilitation and to get those muscles firing again.  His session times run for 30 minutes, where they do a warm-up in a heated pool, with some stretches and messages to his legs and along his spine to relieve tension.  Frankie is on strict NO TOY PLAY at home as directed by the specialist, but under supervision, he is allowed to enjoy some playtime with toys again.  Happy boy!

Bangers IVDD Assist

Bangers is a 4.7 year-old short haired Dachshund from QLD who enjoyed a carefree life with his family and the ragdoll cat until recently when a family member arrived home from school to find he couldn’t use his back legs.

Thankfully his owners knew it was serious and had him at the emergency vet STAT.  It’s important to note that when your dog goes down fast (e.g. paralysis) that time is of the essence.

It was suspected that Bangers had IVDD, and a CT scan was required to confirm the severity (Grading) with a high chance of surgery.  With no pet insurance his owners were advised that they needed an upfront payment of $5,500 (Est cost of $11,000) before the specialist would proceed, and knowing that Bangers was in pain and in dire need of specialist surgery, they drained all their accounts and Bangers was rushed into surgery asap.

Holding their collective breath during the 2-hour surgery his family were relieved when they received an encouraging prognosis, primarily due to the prompt diagnosis and decisive action.

Following a stay in the hospital, Bangers was released into the loving arms of his family to undergo his 6-8 weeks of recovery and is recovering and healing well.  Thankfully he can come to work each day with his fur mum, a crate was made for him for the office and IVDD Assist gifted him a La Luna Stroller for mobility + DISA stroller badge.  The stroller comes with a pop-out capsule that safely clips into the car for ease of transport and for carrying up and down stairs around the home and the office!

Gentle healing Bangers, we know you have got this in spades and well done to your amazing family who never gave up on their boy, even in the most trying of times.

Doug IVDD Assist

Doug IVDD Assist

Doug IVDD Assist

Doug who is 8 (fondly referred to as Dougie), lives in Brisbane QLD, and underwent surgery for Grade 2 cervical IVDD in November 2020. Sadly, he relapsed on 18th July 2022, requiring emergency surgery once again in the cervical region.

The journey following his 2nd surgery wasn’t smooth sailing with him suffering a setback a few days later. Another CT scan was performed revealing that the repaired disc had slightly collapsed. It was an anxious time for his family while he remained in hospital under pain management and closely monitored by his specialist and nursing staff.

Thankfully he rebounded and was finally released with the firm instruction – 6 weeks of very strict crate rest. Being cervical IVDD with strict rehabilitation requirements it came with its own unique set of complications as picking him up and out of a crate proved to be extremely awkward and painful.

IVDD Assist came to his aid and gifted a La Luna Stroller so that he can be close to his family at a manageable height and most importantly mobile! Dougie goes with his family to their work office each day and with the detachable capsule, he is now safely secured in the car for transport.

It’s now three weeks since his surgery and his family is pleased to report Dougie is progressing well and attending regular physio appointments with his favourite Qualified Physiotherapist Katrinka, as well as doing his daily exercises at home. This time it’s a slow gentle recovery and he is now around 75% to what he was pre-op.

His social life is to be envied, going to work each day with his family where he is close by for plenty of extra pats and “good boys”. Heal gently Dougie, with love from your friends at Dachshund IVDD Support Australia.

NB: Dachshunds have 7 cervical, 13 thoracic, 7 lumbar and 3 sacral vertebral bodies. There is a disc or “cushion” that sits in between every vertebral body in the spinal column apart from C1/C2 and S1/S2/S3. Thus, the average dog has 26 intervertebral discs all of which are susceptible to mineralisation (calcification).

It should be noted that IVDD can strike more than once, even after surgery. Statistics indicate that 25% of dogs will relapse within the first 12 months

IVDD Assist Sizzle

Sizzle has been his owner’s best friend and companion since he was 3 months old. Through the hardest and challenging of times, he has never left her side, never missing the opportunity to lick tears away. He truly is a special boy.

It’s not uncommon given the signs & symptoms of an impending IVDD episode for it to be misdiagnosed, and often dogs are sent home on pain relief and rest. This is what happened with Sizzle when the following morning he was unable to walk at all, paralysed and crying in unbearable pain.  He was rushed into ARH Essendon Fields for a 2nd opinion and emergency surgery was performed that day!
He is now back home in the loving arms of his family; his best buddy Yogie has gone away for a few days tripping in the truck with his furdad so he can settle into his new normal routine.

To help with recovery IVDD Assist has gifted this well-deserving family a La Luna Stroller for sleeping in around the house while recovering and gentle walks for mental health. The La Luna Stroller comes with a detachable car capsule which is great for human backs, convenient for specialist appointments and for just cruising … which we are told Sizzle loves.

Happy healing Sizzle, love from the Team at DISA

Willa IVDD Assist

Willa IVDD Assist
Willa IVDD Assist

Willa is an adorable little 7-year-old from Newcastle NSW Australia.  In May, after greeting her family when they returned home, she lay down in pain and sadly within a few short hours paralysis had set in, she was unable to stand.

Eventually, after seeking a 2nd opinion from a veterinary clinic that understood IVDD, she was diagnosed with high-grade IVDD.  Willa’s family (2 adults, 2 young kids 4 and 5) were heartbroken at her diagnosis and future prognosis.  Her fur-brother Bane just sits next to her cage and is literally her carer when the family aren’t around.

Willa’s family weren’t prepared to say goodbye to their little chocolate dapple girl and set about researching treatment options.   A conservative pathway was adopted working alongside a Qualified Rehab Specialist to give her the best chance at living a happy new normal.  Conservative treatment is essentially a course of action where the affected discs are given time to heal and regenerate, and often coupled with allied therapies, supplements, and lots and lots of patience.

To give Willa a “little leg up” IVDD Assist has gifted 2 x rehabilitation sessions to aid her healing journey, you got this Willa, with love from your friends at DISA.

Skipper IVDD Assist

From living on a yacht for 2 years, going off-grid for an adventure in the country, to currently overseeing the building of a custom built by his owners Nick & Adele in the historic town of York WA, Skipper the 5-year-old short-haired mini-Dachshund has lived a life of adventure, love, and companionship.

None more so when in 2019 Skipper became the constant companion to 7-year-old Mia Lorraine (Nick & Adele’s granddaughter) who sadly lost her battle with an aggressive and rare cancer 9 months later.  Mia Lorraine wanted to be a vet when she grew up and the love between them both knew no bounds, he understood her more than words. He would visit and sit with her when she was so sick and unable to speak, he knew how she felt and would just lay by her and give her comfort.

So, when Skipper recently went down with high-grade IVDD (4-5) his family were devastated and financially not in a great place.  But knowing how much he had helped during their darkest days they knew that letting their boy go wasn’t an option. With the guidance of a knowledgeable vet and after reading through our website (www.ivdd.org.au), they decided to adopt a conservative management pathway which has proven time and again to provide positive results, particularly when owners, professionals and dogs collaborate and dedicate themselves to the cause. As we often say, “never say never to a Dachshund”.

To help Skipper on his recovery journey, IVDD Assist has gifted him a Buddy & Belle Pet Stroller, DISA Stroller Badge & LickiMat and because it gets very chilly in York over the winter months, a Cuddle Therapy Pack (Cuddle Sack & Heat Pack). We hope you enjoy your outings with your family Skipper, heal gently, sending love and warm hugs from your friends at DISA.

Mia’s family have been raising funds for a therapy dog for the Perth Children’s Hospital. If you would like to help this worthy cause, we welcome you to visit https://www.mycause.com.au/p/240105/furever-perfect

Larry IVDD Assist March 22 Larry IVDD Assist March 22 Larry IVDD Assist March 22 Larry IVDD Assist March 22

Larry is a 6-year-old Dachshund from South Australia who was recently bitten by the IVDD bug when he started to show some typical signs of an impending IVDD episode, tight stomach, knuckling and wobbly walking.

His fur-mum set about researching the possible options available in the management and treatment of an IVDD episode and it was decided, with the guidance of a great “holistic” vet, to approach his IVDD management conservatively (non-surgically).

Conservative treatment requires patience and time. It’s all about healing and pain management where nature is allowed to take its course and the affected area is encouraged to heal through extended rest and accompanied by gentle modalities such as acupuncture, laser, and even diet and supplements.  Larry’s vet has been performing numerous modalities, including acupuncture on “bad backs” within the veterinary field for many years so IVDD Assist has gifted 3 x Acupuncture & Therapy Sessions to aid Larry in his treatment plan.

Patience is the key to conservative treatment and of course lots of cuddles and love, gentle healing Larry.

Daisy wheels Daisy wheels Daisy wheels

Daisy is an adorable little chocolate girl who lives in Rockhampton QLD. In November last year, she went down with high-grade IVDD and underwent emergency surgery and then spent the proceeding months undergoing rehabilitation by her dedicated fur-mum (who is also a human nurse).

Earlier this year, despite paraplegia, she was given a clean bill of health by her consulting specialist and it was recommended that she be given her independence with the use of a doggie wheelchair.

Finding a set of wheels that fitted Daisy was fraught with frustration due to her deep chest and short legs. After much research, it was decided on a set of Eddie’s Wheels that are custom made in the USA. Precise measurements were taken and everyone held their breath awaiting their arrival. During this time DISA reached out to offer to gift $350 towards the cost of the wheels as being an imported item, the exchange rate and freight had all but doubled the cost!

Daisy’s wheels arrived mid-February and with a little help from some “wheelie dog” specialists she took to them like a duck to water and is now enjoying her newfound freedom with her family, and living her best life.

Connie Connie A Connie B

Connie lives with her best friend Pedro and her awesome family in
Gippsland Victoria.

Connie went down suddenly with Grade 5 IVDD in August 2021 and was rushed to Southpaws in Melbourne, 2 hours by car. She underwent surgery that night where a major discectomy was performed. After discharge, due to the rural location and lack of rehabilitation services in the area, her family has lovingly undertaken her rehabilitation and ongoing care, forever hopeful that she will one day walk again.

She is a feisty determined girl and as we see often with these tenacious little hounds, never say never. She still has no independent bowel or bladder control and cannot yet walk, but she has her best mate Pedro and a family who truly loves her.

After receiving Connie’s application, we just knew that we needed to give this family a little leg up. We decided on a stroller as we understand how important mental health is when coping with a disabled dog, for all members of the family, and of course, Connie and Pedro could once again enjoy outings together. It was a no brainer!

This week Connie and her family became the recipients of a La Luna Stroller, made possible by the generosity of Community Underwriting https://www.communityunderwriting.com.au/ who awarded our organisation a grant to assist owners struggling with the burden of being owned by an IVDD Dachshund. To be able to give owners a little leg up brings sunshine in what can be a truly difficult time, both emotionally and financially.

Now a final word from Connie’s mum ….
The pram has arrived, and it is amazing!
And even better is that Connie absolutely loves it. She now scoots over to it and barks as if to say, “mummy take me out!”

Honey

In December 2021 we reached out to an elderly owner who lives 70kms west of Sydney NSW, to see if we could find her help with the rehabilitation of her beautiful girl Honey.
Understanding how important it is to receive the correct guidance when conservatively treating a high-grade IVDD hound, after chatting with her on the phone we quickly realised that IVDD Assist needed to give Honey a little leg up!
Honey’s owner was gift rehabilitation sessions with Neil Barnsley of Animal Holistic Therapies Website to aid her recovery and healing.
